Flood warnings downgraded to watches in Cariboo, Chilcotin

VICTORIA — The B.C. River Forecast Centre (BC RFC) has downgraded flood warnings in place for the Cariboo and Chilcotin regions as the rate of snowmelt has eased in the area.

Both regions are now subject to flood watches.

According to an advisory posted to the BC RFC website, most rivers in the areas have experienced “a peak level” and are slowly on the decline.

That includes the Bonaparte River below Cache Creek, which is flowing at a 20-year to 50-year rate of flow and slowly going down.

San Jose above Boreland Creek in the Williams Lake area is also receding, flowing today at a 10-year to 50-year rate.

The BC RFC says cooler temperatures have led to decreased snowmelt and snowpack in the low- to mid-elevations is diminishing.

Officials say they will monitor rainfall this week, which could reverse the receding trend in certain river catchment areas.
