City of Kamloops scrubs annual Canada Day festivities in Riverside Park

KAMLOOPS — Though talk has turned to the possibility of resuming normal events after weeks of COVID-19-related restrictions, the City of Kamloops is not taking any chances with one of the biggest events of the year.

Thursday (Apr. 23), the City officially cancelled the annual Canada Day celebration in Riverside Park, according to a news release.

The decision comes after “consultation with the organizing partners,” namely the Kamloops Multicultural Society and the Kamloops Arts Council.

The City says Canada Day events regularly attract upward of 30,000 people to Riverside Park to partake in mainstage entertainment and patronize vendors.

Mayor Ken Christian expressed disappointment at the decision, but added, “we cannot lose focus of the bigger picture and the health of our residents.”

“We look forward to celebrating together in 2021.”
