Province issues flood warning for Cariboo, Chilcotin including Cache Creek

Apr 21, 2020 | 9:59 AM

CACHE CREEK, B.C. — The entire Cariboo and Chilcotin regions are now subject to a flood warning.

The B.C. River Forecast Centre instituted the warning Tuesday morning (Apr. 21), and maintained an earlier warning for the Nazko and West Road Rivers further north.

In an advisory issued on the Centre’s website, officials say the warning is due to rising water on smaller creeks and tributaries.

Those conditions are caused by a rapid transition to warmer spring temperatures, combined with above-normal snowpack levels in the mid- to high-elevation areas.

Monday, the Village of Cache Creek issued an evacuation order for one property along Cache Creek, and instituted an evacuation alert for 11 other properties. Later Monday evening, the village expanded the evacuation order to include all properties adjacent to Cache Creek, from and including Brookside Campground to Quartz Road.

The River Forecast Centre says the Bonaparte River is flowing at 55 cubic-metres-per-second, which is considered a five- to 10-year flow rate — and rising.
