KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue made short work of an afternoon house fire yesterday on the city’s North Shore.

Platoon Captain Darryl Cooper says around 4:30 p.m, KFR crews were called to a home on Belmont Crescent. Two engines, a tower, ladder, and rescue truck were all sent to the scene.

“Crews arrived, and found smoke showing so they caught a hydrant,” he explains, “(Crews) investigated and found several pets inside – including a lizard. Crews got it knocked down so it was a quick save, and everybody got away okay.”

Cooper says the home’s occupants were outside when they arrived, and firefighters went in to retrieve the remaining pets indoors. According to Cooper, the smoke appeared to be coming from the basement, but a cause has not yet been determined, and investigators are still putting together a report on the matter.

It’s not yet clear how damaging the fire was to the home or how it started, but Cooper adds that in general right now, they do want people to be careful.

“We’ve had some structure fires recently, and people should just make sure not to leave any pots on the stove that could catch on fire,” he stresses, “It’s easy to get distracted, I know we’ve got a million things going on, but when you start cooking, don’t forget you’ve left something on the stove.”
