Columbia Shuswap Regional District opts against closing boat launches amid pandemic

SALMON ARM, B.C. — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) has decided against closing its boat launches as part of restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a news release issued Friday (Apr. 17), the CSRD says it is taking its cues from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, but she has yet to recommend a restriction on recreational boating.

While boating can continue, the district says residents are asked to respect physical distancing recommendations.

Additionally, the CSRD is advising people to not travel to the district to boat. District officials have expressed concern about people from outside the area arriving to enjoy recreational properties, in defiance of the direction of public health officers.

Boat launches open on Shuswap and Mara Lakes include:

  • Windsor Road at Swansea Point
  • Markwart Road in Sorrento
  • Whitehead Road in Eagle Bay
  • Magna Bay in Celista

The CSRD says the Harbour Road Boat Launch in Blind Bay is closed, though that is due to low water on Shuswap Lake.
