RCMP say bicycle thefts are on the increase in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP says, in recent weeks, incidents of bicycle thefts have gone off the chain.

In a news release, spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the warming weather has meant more people are taking their bikes out of storage and leaving them available to thieves.

Shelkie encourages bicycle owners to take a number of steps to prevent theft — or more easily recover their bikes after they have been taken.

  • Record and retain the serial number of your bike.
  • Take photographs of your bike any time you modify it.
  • Register your bike on the 529 Garage app.
  • Whenever possible, store your bike inside of your residence or inside of a shed that has been securely locked.
  • Bikes should be secured with high quality steel locks whenever not in use.
  • If you are travelling, do not store your bike in/on your vehicle overnight, bring it inside.
  • Report suspicious people who appear to be “casing” your neighourhood for theft opportunities.
  • In the event of a bike theft, immediately report the incident to police and provide the serial number and photos.
  • If you find your bike in the community, immediately contact the police. It is not recommended that you attempt to retrieve the bike on your own.
