KAMLOOPS — The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has bestowed a Thompson Rivers University (TRU) researcher with a rare honour.

According to a TRU news release, Dr. Lisa Bourque Bearskin is one of six researchers in Canada to be given a $1.52 million research chair for Indigenous wellness in nursing.

TRU says Bourque Bearskin is the only researcher in B.C. to be given the honour.

The release says Bourque Bearskin’s research “focuses on advancing Indigenous health nursing that promotes wellness and participation, and that empowers nurses to advocate for patient access to traditional wellness practices within culturally safe and secure health-care environments.”

The five-year research chair is supported by CIHR, the First Nations Health Authority, the Canadian Nursing Federation and TRU.

Bourque Bearskin says the investment “provides an opportunity for all nurses to make research part of their everyday practice, and shows a positive step toward enacting authentic reconciliation.”
