KAMLOOPS — The Mustard Seed is putting out a call for personal protective equipment for its frontline staff.

Much of Kamloops’s homeless population attends the Mustard Seed’s Outreach Centre for meals, clothing and other resources.

It’s a service that continues to operate during the COVID-19 pandemic with additional screening of those coming into the building.

With people going in and out of the building, the Mustard Seed is in need of protective gear for its staff and clients.

“If people can donate any sort of personal protective equipment that is very, very helpful,” said Michaela Jyrkkanen, Clinical and Advocacy Services manager at the Mustard Seed Kamloops, “that’s our top priority right now for keeping our staff and our clients safe. We’ve had questions from the Kamloops community about can people sew masks to donate to us? And, yes, we will accept those as well, those will be going to our clients especially to help keep them safe in our community.”

The Mustard Seed will also accept financial donations online.

While the COVID-19 situation has been a stressful one for all of Kamloops, Jyrkkanen says the community has stepped up to help.

“We’ve had so many good news stories of people just pulling together and doing the best that they can,” she said. “We had a local distilling company donate hand sanitizer that they made, stuff like that, it’s really heartwarming in this time to see our community pull together and help everybody out, especially those most vulnerable.”
