City of Kamloops encouraging fewer landfill trips during COVID-19 pandemic

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is asking for proper social distancing and hygiene protocols to help protects its frontline garbage and recycling staff.

In a news release, the City says in this time of isolation, many residents are working on their homes and yards which results in more trips to landfills.

The Barnhartvale landfill is currently closed, and the Mission Flats landfill is implementing social distancing protocols by limiting access to drop-off bins.

This could result in extended delays for customers.

The City is asking residents to make infrequent but efficient trips — for example making sure you have a full truckload before going to the landfill.

While there, respect other customers and staff by maintaining social distance and practicing good hygiene. Payment is by credit, debit, or on-account only.

There are no changes to garbage and recycling collection at this time but residents are encouraged to download the Waste Wise Kamloops app to stay up-to-date with any changes in collection if need be.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, residents are asked to bag all personal hygiene products, used tissues, cleaning cloths, face masks, gloves and similar items, securely tie garbage bags shut, and wipe down the handles of your collection carts.

If you’re sick or caring for someone who is sick, double-bag all personal waste in plastic garbage bags and securely tie all bags shut and dispose of them as regular residential garbage.

Unbagged or loose items will not be collected.
