PETERS: So you’re self-isolated. Now what?

THE SCOURGE OF COVID-19 is now one that has had a direct impact on the lives of absolutely everyone.

How often can you say that?

While there are some people who are self-isolating because they are symptomatic, there are many others who are self-isolating as a precaution despite feeling well.

That’s great, but they’re faced with another scourge – boredom and a lack of purpose.

Some can take their jobs home with them, but others have little to do besides lie on their couches and count the little bumps in their popcorn ceilings.

So here are some suggestions for the downcast and uninspired.

First, get outside.

My parents in southern Manitoba may as well be in the dead of winter, with snowdrifts still blanketing the ground and temperatures well below zero.

As I record this, the windchill in Manitoba is -23.

Here in the B.C. Interior, we’re blessed with sunshine, gorgeous spring temperatures and an endless network of beautiful nature.

There is plenty you can do outside while still respecting social distancing guidelines.

Second, get your life organized.

For everyone who says they would be happy to clean out their garages and spare rooms if only they had time – now you have time.

Netflix may be enticing, but assign yourself a small project every day and you’ll be surprised how beneficial it is to your mental and physical health.

Finally, take the opportunity to improve yourself.

Read a book. Learn something about history and the world around you.

If you’re not much into book-learning, watch an instructional YouTube video or sign up for a course online.

COVID-19 is, of course, horrible for society and will impact the health and finances of millions of people.

Coming out of it with some self-improvement would be a small, but not insignificant, silver lining.
