What to do in the middle of … whatever the hell this is? It’s got the world shook up and everyone paying attention.

Borders are shut down, downtowns are ghost towns, calendars, workplaces and schools are left near vacant.

We feel helpless, we feel stuck, we feel afraid.  We feel overwhelmed with the gravity and uncertainty of the situation.

When I don’t know what to do, I ask myself this question…

What is my role in this?

This question empowers me, it makes me think, it helps me move forward no matter the situation.

And COVID-19 is no different.

There may many things that we cannot control but as always there are some very important things that we can.

We can control our own thoughts, feelings and actions.

So… the COVID-19 is the situation.

At this time I have decided my role is to help by:

Putting things in perspective; nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day. COVID-19 has claimed 8272 lives in total, over 82,902 people that have contracted the disease have recovered.
Monitoring my thoughts and ensuring they are not spiralling down a negative path and feeding the frenzy.
Proceeding with caution in public, practicing excellent hand washing and using safety precautions. I am currently self-isolating as I recently had work over the border.
Following the news ‘lightly’ as to be informed but not too much as to get panicked, take news fasts.
Spread optimism, hope and positivity instead of adding to the panic.
Utilizing the space on the calendar to nurture myself, spend time in nature, improve my relationships and do other things that bring my joy.
Helping my neighbours who are quarantined, scared and lacking some things that I can share, asking ‘what do you need’, ‘how can I help’.
Thanking & appreciating my essential service workers – who don’t have a choice about whether to go to work or not.
offering this virtual event to you…Stop the Spread – Gaining Emotional Wellness in the midst of COVID-19
This 40 minute Zoom virtual assembly, is specifically those who are trying to manage, not only the spread of the disease, but all the emotional damage that it’s doing as well.

We will address psychological concerns such as anxiety, loss of control and fear but will primarily focus on hope and optimism in turbulent times by being a role model for resiliency, psycho-social wellness and positive emotions.

It’s critical for our community that we, do everything we can to keep ourselves not just physically well but emotionally well.

These things make me feel like I am contributing positively during a trying time. They make me feel better.

And so I ask you, what is your role in this?

What are you being called to do during this unprecedented time in history?

This is not a rhetorical question, I’d really like to know.

As often happens in times of crisis, people come together to help, get creative and support each other and I suspect this situation will provide an opportunity for the same.

Meanwhile, as they say in Texas, wash your hands like you cut up jalapeños and have to put your contacts in!

Be well, physically and emotionally, Steph

* Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), conferred by the National Speakers Association is the speaking profession’s international measure of professional platform proficiency. Less than 10 percent of speakers have earned this credential and are recognized as some of the best in their fields. Stephanie was one of only five professional speakers in Canada (and the only woman) to attain this designation in 2013.
