City of Kamloops to await province’s decision on postponing arts centre referendum

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says direction will have to come from the provincial government if the referendum into the Kamloops Centre for the Arts (KCA) will be postponed.
The referendum on borrowing for the KCA is scheduled for April 4. The City has asked the province’s ministry of municipal affairs and housing whether that can be pushed to another time due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
In a news release issued Tuesday (Mar. 17), Chief Election Officer Deanna Campbell says,” [t]he ability to change the process and timelines of a referendum once the process has been initiated lies with the Minister (sic), not with the local government.”
Campbell says she has been working with the ministry and will take direction once the ministry sets it.
