SUN PEAKS, B.C. — Officials at Sun Peaks say the skiing is great, the morale is great, but COVID-19 has dealt a big blow to the 2019-20 ski season.

That’s why, according to a Sun Peaks Resort news release issued Monday (Mar. 16), the mountain will wind down operations this week.

The last day for snow sports at Sun Peaks will be Wednesday.

This comes after Harper Mountain announced its own closure, effective Monday afternoon.

Sun Peaks says lift ticket sales have ended and no new bookings will be taken at the Sun Peaks Grand.

Those not already at the resort are asked not to travel to Sun Peaks.

The resort says it is working on a plan to “take care of” impacted employees.

It notes there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the area right now and, though winter sports were a welcome escape for many, “an appropriate response was now required.”

On its website, Harper Mountain addressed the closure by saying, “[a]s tough a decision as this has been, we feel it is the right thing to do under the current circumstance.”
