Kamloops’ Seedy Saturday event cancelled due to COVID-19

KAMLOOPS — The unofficial kickoff to the gardening season is the latest to be cancelled in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seedy Saturday, which was set for Saturday morning at OLPH Gym, was cancelled Friday afternoon by organizer Daniela Basile after she spoke with Interior Health.

“I spoke with one of [Interior Health’s] officers, and we have to cancel Seedy Saturday,” Basile told CFJC Today.

Basile explained that due to the volume of people expected at the event throughout the day, IH advised her the event couldn’t move forward.

“It’s the people in the space, it’s people touching surfaces and the transmission — with more people there, they’re touching doors, they’re touching washroom [surfaces],” Basile said. “It’s to try and keep things from spreading.

Seedy Saturday organizers are hopeful that if and when the situation surrounding COVID-19 calms down and the spread of the virus is contained, they’ll be able to host the event later in the spring.

“I sent an email to all the vendors, and we do have a new available towards the end of April. If they’re available, we might proceed if the virus is contained,” Basile said.

“We hope we can have the event. It’s really a shame because we can see Seedy Saturday has become important to people. We’ll just have to wait and see how things work out.”

Seedy Saturday 2020 is just the latest cancellation as a result of the current coronavirus situation. For a full of cancellations, you can visit CFJC Today.
