SUN PEAKS, B.C. — The Kamloops-Thompson School District’s Board of Education has approved some changes for Sun Peaks Elementary.

For the 2020/21 year, the school will add Grades 8 and 9, changing the name of the school from Sun Peaks Elementary to Sun Peaks School.

The school board was also tasked with deciding how many days a week the students would attend classes.

The elementary school students currently attend classes four days a week.

“It was recommended that we move to a five-day week for all grades,” said Board Chair Kathleen Karpuk. “What was decided [Monday] night was, based on community feedback, to keep the Kindergarten to Grade 7 students at a four-day week because that works for the community, however, to implement the five-day week Grades 8 and 9.”

By having the Grade 8 and 9 students attend classes five days a week, the students will be kept on the same schedule as other students across the district.

They will also have more course options.

Eventually the school district hopes to see the Sun Peaks School accomodate students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

“This is part of that transition, that eventually we will have that full service school up at Sun Peaks and it goes towards our vision of having a brick and mortar school in that community,” Karpuk said.
