KAMLOOPS — Two-dozen communities in the province, including Kamloops, have been awarded grants for local community wellness, safety and harm-reduction projects.

In a news release, the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions says 24 municipalities and community partners have received up to $50,000 in funding for initiatives related to the overdose crisis. The opportunity for the grants was first announced by Mental Health and Addictions Minister Judy Darcy in September 2019.

“Everyone deserves to live in a healthy and safe community,” Darcy said in the release. “We know that when people come together to identify challenges and solutions, we can create vibrant communities that put residents’ wellness first.”

The one-time grants are supported by the Community Crisis Innovation Fund through the Health Ministry.

The City of Kamloops says the funding will be used for installing and maintaining tamper-proof sharps bins on private property, conducting weekly community cleanups, and gather information regarding the disposal of sharps in the community.

Grant recipients include Kamloops, Merritt, Prince George and Hope.
