Several big ticket items on the desk of TNRD interim CAO

KAMLOOPS — Two weeks into the role, the Thompson Nicola Regional District’s interim CAO is fully immersed in the new job — working on everything from new library plans, to coronavirus procedures.

Following the retirement of Sukh Gill, Randy Diehl stepped in to fill the position, and says his previous experience as a municipal Chief Administrative Officer has proven useful with the regional district.

“I’ve done a lot of work with small towns, villages, and larger cities as well, and non-profit associations,” he says. “I have a pretty keen eye about what works and what does not work, and there’s a good organizational group here.”

Along with recent coronavirus (COVID-19) prevention efforts, Diehl steps into the administrative role with several big ticket items on the TNRD radar.

“The big challenges right now in the region are we’re looking at creating a new library in the southwest sector, we have huge water management issues in terms of domestic water. Being able to provide good clean water for people to drink throughout the region is a huge task,” he says. “There’s not enough taxation regionally to support that, so we have to rely on grants from senior levels of government.”

He adds that there are a few projects on the go the TNRD is planning to implement to improve the water situation.

As interim, Diehl’s role will also include helping find a permanent replacement to fill the gap — a job he says several people have already expressed interest in.
