ROTHENBURGER – If we’re going to do away with the time change, just do it

Last year, he said the change to permanent DST wouldn’t happen until this year because the U.S. Congress — which must give its permission to those states — was too busy with the impeachment of Donald Trump.

This year he says the U.S. presidential election campaign is the problem.

The whole thing is unnecessary, anyway. There’s nothing wrong with changing the clock to give ourselves more daylight hours late in the day during summer, and a little more morning light in winter.

The government’s online survey last year didn’t even provide the option of keeping Pacific Standard Time 12 months of the year. The arguments for one system are no more compelling than for another.

But the decision has clearly been made. All the premier has to do is proclaim it. Why do we have to wait for the decision to be made for us in the U.S.?

We get along just fine using the metric system while the U.S. remains on Imperial. We drive with kilometres per litre, they drive with miles per gallon. They talk about degrees Fahrenheit, we use Celsius.

Living in different time zones wouldn’t be much different. If we’re going to do it, let’s just do it, and never mind what’s happening south of the border.
