RCMP issue tips after troubling increase in Salmon Arm crime

SALMON ARM, B.C. — RCMP in Salmon Arm are passing on some advice to the public after an alarming increase in crime.

According to a news release, RCMP in the Shuswap city have responded to more than 1,100 calls since New Year’s Day, representing a jump of about 10 per cent compared to the same time period in 2019.

Staff Sgt. Scott West says part of that increase may be due to more proactive enforcement on the front line, but he still has some tips for the public to prevent them from becoming victims.

Theft-from-motor-vehicle complaints in Salmon Arm were up 64 per cent during January and February.

West reminds people to lock their vehicles at all times and remove valuables. He says thieves most often target sunglasses, purses and wallets, personal identification, electronics, spare keys or cash.

And West says frauds and scams are also up slightly from 2019, though they have been increasing for the past several years.

He reminds people to hang up if they suspect anything untoward or unprofessional about a received phonecall. West also says it’s important people never give up personal information over the phone or via email.
