United Way tackles period poverty in latest campaign

KAMLOOPS — The United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo has launched a local Period Promise campaign in order to provide basic hygiene products to women in need.

Through the campaign people are encouraged to donate financially or drop off products at one of the more than 40 participating locations in Kamloops.

Katie Neustaeter, marketing and communications director with the United Way, says one in four Canadian women struggle to provide period products for themselves or a child, resulting in missed days of work or school.

She says the United Way’s goal in this campaign, running from March 2 to 12, is to eliminate period poverty.

“Period poverty is something that is really hidden,” Neustaeter said. “It’s not something that is talked about every day or that people can see. Women have been struggling with this issue for a very, very long time, but suddenly it’s not as faux pas to talk about it within culture, so that’s when we can start to make a difference.”

At the end of the campaign non-profits will gather all of the products and give them to women in need in this community.

The Kamloops and District Real Estate Association is one of the companies collecting products and financial donations through the Period Promise campaign.

“We’re just starting this actually today,” said Board Director Chelsea Mann, “so we’re going to put it out to our membership and they are able to donate here at the office and bring in the products, or they can put their donations right on their monthly bill, so it’s really easy for them.”
