CACHE CREEK, B.C. — A Burnaby RCMP officer who was visiting the Southern Interior helped catch an alleged car thief in Cache Creek Wednesday (Feb. 26).

In a news release, RCMP say just prior to 8:00 p.m. yesterday, an off-duty RCMP Staff Sergeant stopped at a gas station in Cache Creek, where he saw a man frantically chasing his car on foot after it was allegedly stolen.

The suspect fled north toward Clinton, and the off-duty officer pursued. He provided “vital updates” to dispatchers who relayed the information to responding frontline officers.

The suspect was allegedly driving dangerously, at times travelling in the oncoming lanes of the highway.

Police used a spike belt to detain the man.

“RCMP officers not only work and live, but often travel through communities across our beautiful province. This is just one example of how we are always ready to respond to emergencies,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, spokesperson for the RCMP Southeast District. “The off-duty officer’s situational awareness, and collaboration with our police dispatchers and Clinton RCMP officers resulted in the safe arrest during a situation which had the potential to harm someone.”

A 34-year-old Williams Lake man is expected to appear in court April 30.
