BRAVE event aims to empower Kamloops girls

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Salvation Army is hosting an event this weekend to celebrate the value and strength of being a girl.

Volunteers have begun decorating Bible Truth Church where dozens of girls from the ages of 12 to 18 will take part in the BRAVE event.

This will be the first time the female empowerment event will be held in B.C.

“We want them to be reminded that they are loved, that they are cared for, that there are people in our community, in the city of Kamloops, that just want to support them, that want to walk alongside and help them if they ever find themselves in a place that they need that,” said Capt. Kelly Fifield with the Kamloops Salvation Army.

Each girl who registers will receive a gift bag with a journal, water bottle and t-shirt.

The event will feature music, dance and pampering.

BRAVE is geared toward vulnerable youth in order to speak positivity into their lives.

“Yes, there are girls who are in vulnerable situations, girls that have come through the foster care system, girls that have been adopted, girls that have come from homes that have just moved around and they’ve had a rough time, those are girls that I think we’d look at in society and say, ‘they’re vulnerable,'” Fifield said. “But, the reality is every girl, at one time or another will find herself in a vulnerable place.”

The BRAVE event takes place from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 29) and is completely free to attend.

You can register at the event or online.
