KAMLOOPS — High school aged girls had the opportunity to hear from a number of women with careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) today (Feb. 21).

Open Doors in STEAM took place at Thompson Rivers University.

Girls chose the sessions they wanted to attend based on a description.

The goal of the event was to open the students up to a range of career opportunities they might never have thought of pursuing.

“It looks like now as we look at education programs, there is gender equity as a piece that is more obvious and more present now,” said Elizabeth De Vries, technology coordinator for School District 73. “It’s exciting just for these women to know that they have basically whatever they want to accomplish, if they continue to apply themselves and seek opportunity, they can do it.”

130 girls in Grades 10 to 12 attended the event, many were there to plan their next steps after graduating high school.

“It’s been really eye-opening about different opportunities I can get because there’s a military program that I didn’t even know about and you get paid to go to it, which is really cool when I think I want to try and do that,” said Grade 12 student Makena Kitchen.

“We just saw an engineer talk and I didn’t really know what engineering was until she talked about it,” said Grade 10 student Isabella Marchese. “So that was really cool to see that and just how it’s not like one thing, it’s like you can take and engineering degree and branch out into lots of different paths.”
