KAMLOOPS — Students at Westsyde Elementary School enjoyed a pizza party on Thursday as a reward for donating the most amount of food to the Salvation Army among primary schools in the district.

Westsyde Elementary beat out four other participating schools in the Be A Hunger Hero food drive. It takes place for two weeks between Novemeber and December. The winning school is based on food donations per student.

“The amount that Westsyde Elementary brought in was 573 lbs. of food, so we then took that amount and calculated it and and figured out how much it is per student, so then all of the smaller schools can compete fairly,” said Salvation Army Captain Kelly Fifield. “We were super excited that Westsyde won this year with it being the first year that they’re up and back open and operating.”

The students, who enjoyed the pizza during their lunch hour on Thursday, were super proud of their accomplishment.

“It was pretty cool because a school I’ve been in has never won this before, and raising over 500 lbs. was a lot of food,” said Westsyde Elementary student Sydney Rowse.

All the donated food has been used at the Salvation Army’s Storehouse Food Bank. It is always looking for more donations.

“Just in the last six months alone, we have given out almost 16,000 lbs. of food and we have served over 900 individuals through that food bank. So we are busy and we’re seeing lots of need,” Fifield says.
