School District 73 looking forward to educational funding laid out in BC Budget

KAMLOOPS — School District 73 is hoping the BC Government’s recently announced budget with $2.8 billion allocated to replace, renovate, or expand K-12 schools will include facilities in Kamloops.

To get a replacement built for Parkcrest Elementary after a fire last September, School District 73 sent off a project definition report last month. Now, SD 73 Secretary Treasurer Kelvin Stretch says the District is waiting to hear back before designs and a building cost can be put together.

“That report was somewhat fast-tracked, and the Ministry has that report now. At this point, they will share that information with the Treasury Board, and once the Treasury Board approves the project, then we will see an announcement shortly thereafter.”

Meantime, the overpopulated Valleyview Secondary is already on the funding list for a $34.5 million dollar rebuild, and Stretch says ground is expected to be broken soon.

“It’ll probably be mid-June when we actually have secured the construction tender, and then you’ll actually start to see some activity out there that’s going to be quite significant.”

Along with Valleyview and Parkcrest, the school district has been looking for funding to improve a number of other aging buildings. Several are over-capacity for student bodies, including South Kamloops Secondary, Sa-Hali Secondary, and Dufferin Elementary.
