MOVIE REVIEW: A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon

MANY QUANTAM LEAPS AGO, before “screen time” was a thing, we would gather on Saturday nights usually with fun finger foods, watch the latest family movie, put the kids to bed, and then view the current adult drama.

Over the long Family Day weekend, feeling somewhat nostalgic, I watched the latest Shaun the Sheep movie from Aardman Animations, home of Wallace and Gromit. This is the second film for Shaun the Sheep. Essentially, the plot is a young alien crash lands on earth and all the farm animals led by Shawn must help to get her back before the usual secret group catches her.

This film was a lot of fun! The sci-fi references from both movies and television are peppered throughout and surprising how they are worked in. There is no “dialogue” so-to-speak, which makes it family-friendly for all members. The humour is usually visual, and highly inventive while refraining from messaging that could bog it down.

I found myself smiling, chuckling and at times laughing out loud while checking my memory banks for the film or TV show certain references were taken from. There is a particular whistle that caused me to go way back and I grinned when I realized just where it was from.

Aardman Animation excels at Claymation, the writing and directing is crisp, the story is easy to follow and never wanders into complicated sub-plots.

A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, did very well in the European market, but sadly, North American audiences didn’t go to its’ theatrical run. I recommend giving A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon some love – available on Netflix.

Big points if you know where that whistle is from. And no, honey, sheep can’t whistle.
