KAMLOOPS — Kyrell Sopotyk seemed destined to score the game-winning goal.

Scoreless since returning to the line-up in the new year, he gave the Blazers their first lead of Family Day Monday, 5-4, with 6:26 left in the third period. The Royals tied it.

The 18 year old then scored the the go-ahead goal on the power play. That appear to be enough. But with Kamloops on the power play again in the final minute and poised to clinch the two points, Kaid Oliver had other plans, going the other way and tying the game at six while shorthanded.

Despite a two-goal game, it wasn’t meant to be for Sopotyk. Instead, Orrin Centazzo was the hero, notching his 39th of the season in overtime to send the faithful home happy on Family Day with a 7-6 win. It restores the Blazers double-digit cushion in the B.C. Division, now leading the Royals by 10 points.

However it didn’t start out promising for the home side, falling behind 2-0 on goals by Philip Schultz and Mitch Prowse.

Connor Zary would cut the deficit to 2-1 after the first with his 32nd of the season on the power play. Quinn Schmiemann got credit for the tying goal, catching the far corner on Royals netminder Adam Evanoff.

Victoria restored its two-goal lead on the road in the second on goals by Schultz and Brandon Cutler, the 4-2 goal coming shorthanded.

But the Blazers stormed back with two straight of their own, both by Logan Stankoven who scored his fifth and sixth goals in two games against Victoria. He now has 25 on the season and is just four goals shy of Rob Brown’s franchise record for goals in a season by a 16 year old.
