WCT hopes for liquor license approval before busy season

KAMLOOPS — Western Canada Theatre hopes to be fully licensed to serve alcohol at the Sagebrush Theatre by April.

WCT’s application for a liquor license went before City Council on Tuesday (Feb. 11) and was received with unanimous support.

Currently, the theatre will occasionally use special event permits to provide alcohol in the lobby.

If it receives the appropriate approvals, the license will permit liquor in almost the entire facility.

“That allows us to include spaces like the little patio outside the lobby, so that on a nice warm spring day you’re able to enjoy a glass of wine before you go into the theatre,” said WCT’s Managing Director Evan Klassen. “We’ve also included the theatre seating itself so that there’s no more rush at intermission for you to kind of guzzle back a beverage, it’s going to be much more civilized as you go back into the performance.”

Klassen says the license would even include the stage itself.

Before that can happen, the application will go before the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch.

Klassen is hoping for a speedy approval.

“We’re hoping that it might be in place by April, which would really allow us to move into our busiest season of dance performances, of community and school events for April, May and June,” he said. “If we could have that license in place by April it would be really great.”
