KAMLOOPS — Crown counsel is calling its final witnesses this week in a first-degree murder trial.

David Miller is charged in connection to the death of Debra Novacluse in August 2016 at the Super 8 Motel in Kamloops.

Tuesday (Feb. 4), Kamloops RCMP Serious Crime Unit Const. Colt Dzaman took the stand to discuss his involvement in the investigation.

Dzaman said he became aware of Novacluse’s death on Aug. 27, 2016 — the same day her body was found in room 112 at Aberdeen’s Super 8 Motel.

Dzaman said he initially obtained witness statements and assisted with the execution of search warrants in Calgary. RCMP officers from Kamloops travelled to Calgary after receiving information that Miller had travelled there after Novacluse’s death.

Novacluse’s truck was located by Dzaman and another investigator outside of a Flying J truck stop in Calgary on Sept. 1.

“The vehicle appeared locked… it appeared that there were minimal items in the cab area,” Dzaman said on the stand, noting that the set of keys for her vehicle was found in the bed of the truck.

Dzaman photographed the truck and seized the keys. The vehicle was then taken to the Airdrie, Alta. detachment.

Officers dusted the truck for fingerprints and took DNA swabs. Several items in the vehicle were seized, including a ball cap, cigarette butts, a notebook, an address book, insurance papers, and a Bell Mobility activation receipt in Miller’s name.

A note found inside the notebook stated, “Dave, Kamloops, Super 8 112” according to Dzaman.

On the way back from Calgary, Dzaman and his colleague stopped at a gas station in Golden, B.C., where they reviewed surveillance footage from Aug. 27. This came after they received information Miller’s bank card had been used there.

“A vehicle (with a) similar description as Debra Novacluse’s pulls up to, I believe it’s the No. 2 pump… and shortly thereafter a male exits that vehicle with descriptors that match that of David Miller,” Dzaman said while reviewing the footage in court.

The footage shows Miller entering the gas station and making a purchase.

Crown counsel is expected to call its final witness Wednesday (Feb. 5). It’s not known yet if defence will call any evidence.

Miller was arrested near Napanee, Ont. on Sept. 1.

None of the allegations against Miller has been proven in court.
