Man surrenders peacefully after Saturday standoff on Skeetchestn reserve

SAVONA, B.C. — A Skeetchestn man was taken to hospital after a tense police standoff at his home Saturday (Feb. 1).

According to Kamloops RCMP, Rural RCMP members were called to the Skeetchestn reserve after reports of a man threatening to use a gun.

Because the 46-year-old man was known to have guns, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called.

Alone in his home, the man refused to come out while speaking to negotiators. Eventually, at about 8:00 p.m., he emerged unarmed.

The man was taken to a local medical facility to be assessed and officers seized the weapon involved.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says this was the best possible outcome.

“In situations where somebody has locked themselves in their home and they have a firearm, it’s a very volatile situation. It’s just best to let the professionals handle this type of situation — that being the Southeast District Emergency Response Team. They have negotiators who can speak and who have been trained to deal with these types of situations,” said Shelkie.
