Kamloops council won’t lease out Stuart Wood School until agreement reached with TIB

KAMLOOPS — Stuart Wood Elementary will not be leased out until the City of Kamloops reaches an agreement with Tk’emlups te Secwepemc (TteS).

That’s according to a decision from a closed council meeting on Jan. 21.

In a news release, the City says Children’s Circle Daycare Society approached council about leasing a portion of Stuart Wood for one year for $24,000.

The Jan. 21 discussion followed a closed council meeting in November 2019 when council received a report from staff about Children’s Circle’s request for a lease due to its need to relocate from its current space — which is adjacent to Royal Inland Hospital — by June 1, 2020.

The new permanent location at 1430 Ninth Avenue is not available until June 2021.

“Stuart Wood was identified by Children’s Circle as a possible short-term location due to the existing classrooms, kitchen, bathrooms, and office space,” the City’s release states. “Discussions with the Province and TteS are still ongoing regarding the future use of the building and therefore, Council instructed staff to seek more information related to the request.”

Council defeated the motion to authorize a one-year lease 4-3 with councillors Arjun Singh, Denis Walsh and Dale Bass in favour, and Mayor Ken Christian and councillors Kathy Sinclair, Bill Sarai, and Dieter Dudy opposed.

Council voted unanimously to deny the lease and deny any further requests to lease Stuart Wood until an agreement with Tk’emlups te Secwepemc is reached.
