Former Kamloops minor hockey player to be inducted into B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame has named six inductees into its class of 2020.

Eric Brewer, who played his minor hockey in Ashcroft and Kamloops is one of four individuals going into the Hall of Fame.

Brewer played junior with the Prince George Cougars.

The 5th overall pick in the 1997 NHL draft by the New York Islanders, Brewer played 16 NHL seasons with the Islanders, Edmonton, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Anaheim and Toronto.

He won Olympic gold with Canada in 2002.

Joining Brewer in the Hall of Fame will be former Canucks defenceman Mattias Ohlund.

The first round draft of the Canucks in 1994 Ohlund played 11 NHL seasons.

Referee Jay Sharrers will join the class of 2020.

Raised in Hope, B.C. Sharrers officiated in the BCHL and WHL before going on to a 1419 game career in the NHL.

He was the first ever black official to work in the NHL, starting his career in 1990.

Ray Stonehouse is going into the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame as a builder —- an owner or excutive in provincial junior “B” hockey for more than 40 years.

Going into the Hall of Fame in the team category are the Kootenay Ice and Penticton Vees.

The Ice of 2002 won the Memorial Cup.

The 2011-2012 Vees won 42 consecutive games and 54 of 60 games on the way to winning the RBC Cup championship.

The B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame Induction will be held Friday, July 24 at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton.
