WolfPack volleyball victories claim Presidents’ Cup for TRU

KAMLOOPS — With both of TRU’s volleyball teams sweeping the UBC Okanagan Heat this weekend, the President’s Cup stays in Kamloops.

After last night’s games, TRU captured the Cup with four wins (2 volleyball, 1 basketball, 1 soccer) and a tie (soccer) to go along with three losses (basketball and two cross country).

The Cup is a battle between all the Canada West sports teams from TRU and the University of British Columbia Okanagan. TRU President Brett Fairbairn was on hand to accept the trophies for the WolfPack last night.

The WolfPack men’s volleyball team swept the visiting UBCO Heat with another 3-0 straight set victory last night.

TRU was led offensively by outside hitter Nimo Benne with 14 kills in 30 opportunities, two solo blocks, one block assist, and two digs.

Fifth-year Charlie Bringloe followed with 13 kills in 22 chances, two service aces, a dig, and two block assists.

Next week, the WolfPack have a bye, and will visit Edmonton for back to back matches with the MacEwan Griffins the following weekend (Feb 7-8).

Meanwhile on the women’s side, TRU continued it’s Saturday trend with another win. The WolfPack haven’t lost on a Saturday night so far this season.

Taking the Heat 3-1 from the Tournament Capital Centre, the WolfPack were led by four players with double digit kills in this match.

Fourth year Avery Pottle had 12 kills in 23 opportunities, alongside two service aces, four digs and a solo block. First team Canada West all-star, and Ukraine product, Olga Savenchuk had 12 kills in 26 swings with four digs and two block assists. Fifth year Kendra Finch played to 11 kills in 27 chances with a match high 17 digs and one block assists. While middle Ksenyia Kocyigit, the former pro-player out of Belarus, had 10 kills in 18 attempts with four digs, two solo blocks and one block assist).

Thompson Rivers has moved to 15-5 on the Canada West regular season, heading into a bye week.
