KAMLOOPS — As part of many activities planned during the Interior Savings Unplug and Play Week in Kamloops, ABC Family Literacy Day will kick off the events tomorrow.

The reading-focused day is one of the many different ways families can learn how to balance in-person learning or play time with digital screen time.

Fiona Clare, Chair of the Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week organizing committee, says the goal is to give families a chance to learn healthy habits.

“If we’re spending a huge amount of time on screen, which is often alone time as well, then we’re missing out on that face to face time, that sort of creative, social time,” she says. “Which is really important for developing early literacy skills. And also just attachment. You know, when you’re spending time together is when you build those bonds.”

Activities this week will be spread throughout Kamloops, Barriere, Clearwater, and Chase for the ninth annual event.

Everything is free to participate in, and Clare says this year’s schedule includes a scavenger hunt, swimming, skating, a magic show, and much more.

“We actually have over 7,000 school children going to try and challenge themselves to spend a little less time on screen, and more time with their families,” she explains. “And last year a huge theme was that children loved that they were spending more time with their family and friends, and also getting to play outside more.”

ABC Family Literacy Day runs from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Henry Grube Education Centre near the Overlanders Bridge, and more information can be found here.
