Rockfall near Overlanders Bridge Friday leads to traffic pattern change

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is looking into a minor rockfall that took place near the south end of the Overlanders Bridge earlier today.

Utility Services Manager Greg Wightman says a geotechnical engineer believes there are no major concerns of large debris falling onto the road.

“There is a possibility for some small rocks to continue to fall,” Wightman told CFJC Today. “In the meantime, we are going to put a bit of a traffic pattern lane in there. We’re just going to shorten up the merge lane on Victoria Street West heading eastbound toward Overlanders Bridge, just to keep everybody safe there and create a pedestrian walkway that will be just a little further away from the bank.”

“The plan, at this point, is to have a [geotechnical engineer] back out again on Monday with a potential remedy that we can have for the situation,” noted Wightman. “It could be rock-scaling. It’s really going to depend on what the geotech’s recommendation is at that point. For now, it’s just a matter of keeping all the pedestrians and vehicles safe.”

Wightman says this is an area that commonly sees some movement during the spring melt.

“It’s something that we see fairly regularly when we have extreme thaw events like this,” he said. “Obviously, going from the -20s that we were in just a week ago to the warm weather we have been having this week, that’s when we start to see some movement and that’s why we do assessments on this bank every year.”
