MERRITT — Drivers taking the Coquihalla from Hope to Merritt today (Jan. 18) are warned to be extra cautious, with a freezing rain warning in effect.

Environment Canada’s warning says freezing rain is expected near Hope late in the afternoon.

A strong storm system is expected to bring snow to the Fraser Valley, with freezing rain anticipated on sections of the Coquihalla and Hope-Princeton Highways. Higher elevations of these routes will likely see rain showers tonight, and freezing rain could last until Sunday (Jan. 19).

Meteorologist Dave Ray says there is a chance for patchy freezing rain on the Merritt to Kamloops section, but so far a warning has not been issued.
