HOPE, B.C. — A police officer in Hope has been cleared of wrongdoing by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) in connection to a motorcyclist’s death last year.

In a report released today, the IIO says the subject officer responded to a report of a break-in at a commercial property in Hope early in the morning on May 16, 2019.

A suspect reportedly left on a stolen motorcycle.

While the officer was approaching the location, they noticed a motorcycle passing in the opposite direction so the officer activated their lights and turned to follow.

The motorcyclist sped off and, according to the IIO, the officer immediately stopped pursuing.

A few minutes later, it was discovered that the person had crashed the motorcycle and was seriously injured. He later died in hospital.

“The evidence collected does not provide grounds to consider any charges against any officer,” IIO Chief Civilian Director Ron MacDonald says. “I do not consider that an officer may have committed an offence under any enactment and therefore the matter will not be referred to Crown counsel for consideration of charges.”
