KAMLOOPS — A new proposed cannabis store slated for a mixed commercial-residential building in Dallas is being met with some criticism.

Kamloops City Council will hear the application for the 5170 Dallas Drive location on Tuesday (Jan. 14), and staff have received two letters from concerned neighbours.

However staff is recommending that council approve the application.

One resident that lives in the building did write a letter of support, stating the business would be a great addition to the community.

Colton Barker who lives in the building wrote a letter against the potential business.

“I absolutely do not want a retail cannabis store in my building period,” Barker said in his email to the City. “There are plenty of young families in and around the area that have their young children see the store. Again, I DO NOT WANT THIS STORE IN MY BUILDING PERIOD.” (sic)

Christine Patton also voiced her concerns as a condo owner in the building.

“[M]y husband and i are 100% against a cannabis store below the condos,” she writes. “We already have people smoking cannabis on the balconies even though this is against the bylaws and have to go back into our condo when this happens.

“People never follow rules and [I] see the smoking of cannabis below the condo units and on balconies becoming more of a problem and having to spend more time inside in the summer months. It may be commercial on the ground floor but it is residential above and i disagree with a license for cannabis in what is mainly a residential area. Keep these stores to fully commercial areas.”

Council will hear the application during Tuesday afternoon’s meeting.
