Kamloops’ Davis says scoring record more important to parents than him

KAMLOOPS — As a basketball star at Westsyde Secondary, Joe Davis was a sought-after player.

The WolfPack didn’t waste time reaching out to the local kid, who thought a lot about playing for TRU.

“Coach [Scott] Clark was my biggest recruiter as a high school athlete,” he said. “I had a lot of interest in TRU at an early age. I quickly made my decision to come to TRU.”

But the now-fifth-year senior could have never dreamed about one day becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer.

“It’s probably more cool for Mom and Dad than it is myself,” said Davis, who acknowledges the support he’s received from his parents and younger brother Kevin, who’s a professional hockey player in the Colorado Avalanche’s farm system. “Obviously, I like to measure success by our team success. I really had no idea going into the season, and of course it’s pretty cool.”

Davis broke the school record on Saturday (Jan. 4) and now sits with 1,028 points. He passed Greg Stewart, now a para shot put athlete, with whom he shares a common bond as a local athlete.

“I always looked up to Greg. He’s a phenomenal guy and a great athlete. I see him all the time training at the TCC and we’re constantly motivating one another still,” said Davis. “Actually, the game I surpassed him, he waited around after the game and was one of the first guys to come over and congratulate me. He’s always been a great role model.”

TRU men’s coach Scott Clark isn’t surprised Davis has eclipsed the school mark.

“He’s a guy who can score. He played five years. He’s got better,” noted Clark. “[But] it’s not about the record. What it is about is a process and that process has been coming to practice, working hard every day for five years. It’s been five off-seasons in the summertime of being in the weight room. Five off-seasons of being in the gym working at his craft.”

Davis is past the record-setting moment. He just wants to help the WolfPack go far in the playoffs.

“I’m confident in this group we have right now. I think we’re continuing to get better, and as long as we continue that progress, I like where we’re at. We’ll see what happens in the playoffs, but as long as we play our best basketball, I’m pretty confident.”
