RCMP issue safety reminders for commuters after sluggish Tuesday morning commute

KAMLOOPS — After a series of minor collisions contributed to traffic headaches on Kamloops streets Tuesday morning (Jan. 7), RCMP are reminding drivers to give themselves plenty of time and space.

“They’re going to need extra time where they’re going because they need to drive slowly and carefully and also to give themselves extra time to brake,” said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie. “Consider when they’re coming to an intersection, to start braking early and also to give themselves a good amount of distance between them and the vehicle in front of them.”

While some of the traffic problems on the morning commute were caused by spun out vehicles trying to traverse the hills, others were caused by minor collisions.

“There have been numerous fender-benders out there today — none of a serious nature in regards to injuries, but some have delayed traffic and backed up traffic for quite a ways,” Shelkie said. “That’s where using your patience comes in handy.”

At about 9:30 a.m., two rollovers happened at the same location along the East Trans Canada Highway near Dallas.

Shelkie says when approaching the scene of an incident, it’s best to give first responders plenty of space to work in as safe an environment as possible.

“There are a lot of first responders out there today. There are police, Kamloops Fire Rescue and also tow truck drivers are out there pulling vehicles out of the ditches,” noted Shelkie.
