Operation Red Nose convoy hit by suspected drunk driver on New Year’s Eve

KAMLOOPS — Operation Red Nose ended its year with a stark reminder of why the service is so important.

Spokesperson Katie Klassen says a Red Nose convoy was giving someone a ride home just before midnight on New Year’s Eve. As they travelled on the Trans Canada Highway in Valleyview near Grand Boulevard, the convoy was hit by a driver suspected to be impaired.

“Right now, everyone seems to be okay. Police and ambulance did attend the scene. Everyone was checked out, so no major injuries there,” said Klassen. “We did talk to the client and the volunteers and everyone seems to be just a little shaken, but seems to be okay.”

There is no word on injuries to the driver who caused the crash.

Klassen says fortunately the incident did not cause more serious injuries.

“It’s just unfortunate that someone did not make the right decision to take an alternative ride home, and that it affected our volunteers,” said Klassen.
