Kamloops RCMP eager for more online crime reports

KAMLOOPS — With an increase in property crime within the city, Kamloops RCMP are reminding the public there is a new way to take action and report these incidents — online.

Since the tool became available last month, 24 reports have been filed through the online system.

The service is designed with property crimes under $5,000 in mind, and Superintendent Syd Lecky says police hope to see more people taking advantage of the website.

“Whatever reports we can get, we’re eager to have. We hope to expand that program in the future, and it will, but right now it’s baby steps. And we need to get that message out.”

Lecky stresses that filing reports helps police map out where the crimes are happening, so they know what areas to monitor, and can warn residents to take extra precautions.

“Well if people don’t report it, we don’t know,” he explains, “So online crime reporting is not only a way to lessen some of the data intake that we have here, it keeps cops on the streets, but it also gives us an opportunity to recognize and for our analysts to be able to target and generate these reports so that we can now focus on those hot spot areas.”

Online Crime Reporting can be found through the City of Kamloops website, or the Kamloops RCMP website.
