KAMLOOPS — The Salvation Army is starting to hand out its hampers to families across the city, and on Thursday morning the organization got a lift from a local car dealership.

In what has become a Christmas tradition for more than 20 years, staff at Kamloops Honda put together 50 hampers for the Salvation Army, which can now help that many more families during the holiday season.

“We are so grateful that Kamloops Honda has donated these 50 hampers to us,” said captain Kelly Fifield from the Salvation Army. “It allows us to reach out into the community, to serve those families. There are 50 families that are being served this Christmas just because Kamloops Honda employees have stepped up, have given selflessly to provide for those that are in need.”

Kamloops Honda sales associate Don Fleming added, “Staff members donated money, sales people per car donate money, and throughout the year that builds. When we get to this time of year, the owner of the company, Sherry Blanchard, she matches the staff contributes. That’s what allows us to get up to 50 hampers.”

The Salvation Army won’t have the hampers for long. They are distributing the hampers starting Friday.

“We’re excited because they’re not just for Christmas. There’s enough food in these hampers to last them for a little bit longer than that. It helps them out into the new year,” noted Fifield.

The Salvation Army is still in need of volunteers to man kettles until Christmas Eve. If you’d like to volunteer, you contact the office at (250) 554-1611.
