Silent Night Memorial Tree lit up to remember lives claimed by overdose

KAMLOOPS — A new display has been set up at the Thompson Nicola Regional District’s North Kamloops Library, as a way to remember loved ones lost to an overdose.

The white and purple tree was brought in to the library by Moms Stop the Harm, a group dedicated to reducing stigma around substance use, supporting people negatively impacted by substance use, and honouring those who lost their lives to an overdose.

The Silent Night Memorial tree includes a variety of informative materials, and a station for visitors to make a memorial ornament and add to the display.

North Kamloops Library Manager Margo Schiller says they were glad to be able to provide a space for the tree.

“We’re really the living room for the community, and so when we were contacted to host the tree, it just really made sense,” she explains. “We’re a safe space where people can come in, they can look at what’s been put on the tree, they can create their own ornament, and learn about, and become more aware of the issues.”

There is no cost to add an ornament to the tree, and the memorial will be in place at the library until December 31.
