KAMLOOPS — Police and fire crews in Kamloops have had a busy day responding to crashes across the city.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says officers have been responding to several crashes in the last few hours.

Shelkie says the roads are very slippery after the morning’s snowfall, and advises drivers to take their time, leave extra distance, and brake early at intersections.

A Ford pick-up truck slid off Mission Flats Road during the noon hour. The driver was travelling east from Domtar when he lost control, leaving the truck on its side, according to Kamloops Fire Rescue.

“We just had a vehicle that was coming down Mission Flats Road. The road’s pretty icy, looks like he lost control and went over the embankment,” said KFR captain David Sakaki. “Fortunately, there were no injuries. We were able to walk him out of the vehicle.”

It was one of many calls to Kamloops Fire Rescue in a short period of time on Monday, as some drivers were caught off guard with the icy conditions.

“You need to slow down,” noted Sakaki. “The roads change so quickly. Just down the road was fine. It was just a little wet. Now, it’s just turned into complete black ice, so just slow down, even if the road conditions are okay at this point. It will change somewhere else.”
