Tsilhqot’in, Ulkatcho announce emergency caribou hunting ban

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Two First Nations in B-C’s Interior have announced an emergency ban on caribou hunting in their traditional territories.
The Tsilhqot’in Nation, west of Williams Lake, and Ulkatcho Nation, near Anahim Lake, say they’re implementing the ban because of drastic population declines of caribou in their regions.
The effort to protect the remaining mountain caribou in the area means all hunting, including First Nations sustenance hunting, is banned for the three herds until further notice.
The bands say the largest of the three herds has declined in population by 86 per cent as of June of this year with only 385 animals remaining.
