KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Music Collective got a chance to see what became of a musical donation to kids at Parkcrest Elementary today.

A Grade 2 class received the instruments several weeks ago, after the community and Kamloops Music Collective (KMC) raised money and brought music supplies for Parkcrest students impacted by their school’s fire earlier this year.

KMC Executive Director Kim Mangan says seeing the kids actually using the instruments in the classroom was rewarding.

“We’re a small organization in town, so it’s really heartwarming when we can see our work coming to fruition. So coming out and watching the kids, it’s really a great feeling. It makes me want to go back and work harder, and do more for the community.”

Teaching staff at Parkcrest, like Erin Quast, say with the mix of coordination, discipline, and creativity
that musical instruments bring out of students, the benefits are immense.

“They (the students) were really excited because they haven’t had much of an opportunity to play instruments. And xylophones and metallophones are a really accessible instrument for kids to play. So as soon as we got them, they were really jazzed.”

She adds that the school is grateful for the community’s support to bring in the musical pieces to the classroom once again.
