Hundreds of shoes to depict murdered women in somber display

KAMLOOPS — Women who have lost their lives to domestic violence will be remembered at a memorial service tomorrow (Dec. 7).

The 12th annual Shoe Memorial will be held at Mocassin Square Gardens from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Each pair of shoes at the event is given a tag naming a woman who was murdered.

The event is sponsored by the Kamloops and District Labour Council and Tk’emlups te Secwepemc.

KDLC President Lois Rugg says the event is a way for people to keep the memory of their loved ones alive.

“I think it’s important for them to have a memorial to continue the memory, to try and stop the violence against women, and I think it does help heal a little bit to express their stories and see the memorial,” Rugg said.

The memorial is expected to contain nearly 300 pairs of shoes, which will be donated to local charities after the event.

In addition to the Shoe Memorial, the Red Dress Memorial will also be a part of the ceremony.

“The Red Dress Memorial has been created to remember the murdered and missing Indigenous women from across Canada,” Rugg said, “so also a very important event and we’re very happy to include that in this year’s ceremony.”
