UPDATE: Two arrested after police chase, shots fired on Highway 97

WESTWOLD, B.C. — UPDATE: A man and woman are in police custody following what RCMP describe as a “dynamic incident” in Falkland and Westwold this morning (Dec 3).

According to a release, North Okanagan RCMP was made aware of a suspicious vehicle in the Falkland area shortly before 8:00 a.m.

Officers set up roadblocks and patrolled the highway in an attempt to stop the vehicle.

The driver allegedly fired shots from the vehicle as they fled from officers.

RCMP called in numerous resources to assist, including the Southeast District Emergency Response Team, RCMP Police Dog Services and an airplane from Kelowna Air Services.

Eventually, RCMP were able to stop the vehicle just east of Westwold, using a spike belt.

Two people were taken into custody.

Westwold Elementary School was locked down during the incident as a precaution, but that order has since been lifted.

Highway 97 will remain closed for some time between Falkland and Westwold while police conduct their investigation.

ORIGINAL: A police incident has led to the closure of Highway 97 west of Falkland this morning.

According to DriveBC, the highway is closed in both directions at Westwold Station Road.

There’s no detour available at this time.

Police have not said what incident led to the closure.
