KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are looking for witnesses after a hit-and-run incident that killed a dog on a Tk’emlups yard Tuesday (Nov. 26).

According to Cpl. Jodi Shelkie, the German Shepherd was on its own yard in the 1000-block of Chief Louis Way at about 12:15 p.m., with its owner watching from inside the home.

“A pickup truck came along and it was viewed by the dog’s owner to fully cross the centre line before hitting the dog, who was at the top of his driveway,” said Shelkie. “After hitting the dog, the vehicle stopped briefly and then continued on down Chief Louis Way.”

Suspect description:

  • White male
  • 45 to 50 years old
  • No facial hair observed
  • Wearing a black hat and sunglasses

Vehicle description:

  • Newer model Ford F-150 crew cab
  • White
  • Black tonneau cover
  • May have had black pinstriping down the side

Shelkie notes the dog’s owner reported the driver holding his hand near his face at the time, meaning he may have been distracted by his phone. She notes the driver had an obligation to stop and follow up.

“This dog was on a private residential driveway. In that fact, it is somebody’s property and there is an onus on a driver, if they injure anybody or do damage to somebody’s property, they have to stop and exchange information,” said Shelkie.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information on the vehicle or driver is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
